🐴☃️❄️ Motivation with your horse in the winter! 🐴☃️❄️

This weeks Tips are all about ways to keep motivated and stay on track with your horse in the final part of winter, by just adding some small activities, so that we get ourselves and our horses ahead for springtime (which is just around the corner!!).

🐴 Planning:
It takes 6-8 weeks to build muscle, so if you were to start exercising your horse now, you would be seeing the results in early April - springtime! So now is the time to start if you haven’t already!

🐴 Something is better than nothing:
It’s so difficult right now in the UK with all of the snow and wintery conditions that we’ve had over the last couple of months, but even if you can just do small amounts of exercise with your horse, you are helping to maintain his muscular and core strength, help all of his bodily systems (digestion etc), and getting a head start for spring!

🐴 Cumulative effects:
On snow days if you can’t ride, I always advise to try and walk your horse out if safe to do so, and I have been employing my hand walking and core work strategy quite a bit this winter! So even if you can only walk out on some days, this will have a cumulative effect if done most days, again giving you a head start when springtime arrives, as you have been doing some work already with your horse!

🐴 Walking:
Don’t under estimate the power of walking!! It’s low impact, great for conditioning, great for bringing your horse back into work, and you can work on your horses posture while you’re doing it! I use hand walking a lot and sometimes add a training aid, walk over poles or walk around the yard to break it up!

🐴 Core work:
The addition of core activation and strengthening work to your horses routine can be transforming! Exercises can be done in the stable if you’re snowed in, and you can do them daily as they only take 5 minutes! Again, if you were to start these now, by the time we get to April, your horse will have been doing core work for 6 weeks - this can make a serious improvement to their posture and core strength!
