🐴 WINTER EXERCISE 🐴

The winter months really do throw up some difficulties with keeping our horses in exercise...rain, wind, snow, ice, frozen ground..and maybe all at the same time!

It's important to keep our horses moving as best we can, to stimulate their digestive system (see last weeks posts!), increase blood flow around the body, and maintain muscle tone and core strength. As well as deal with boredom if stabled!

So here are a few Tips to help...
❄️ Brainstorm some ideas for ways to exercise on the most difficult days! I like hand walking for 20-30 minutes, walking is super effective, low impact, and 20 minutes walking twice a day is so much better for your horse than standing in without any exercise.
❄️ Hand walking, lunging, horse walker, long reining, core activation exercises, are all ways to maintain movement, if you can't ride/hack/school your horse.
❄️ It is possible to exercise in the snow, it just takes some planning (and work)! Digging a path through the snow to your arena and around the edge of the arena will at least enable you to walk your horse.
❄️ Plenty of warm up: when it's cold your horses muscles and joints will take longer to warm up, so a good 10-20 minute warm up in walk is ideal before anything else.
❄️  If your horse can't get out of his stable, you can still do some Core Activation and In Hand exercises in the stable or barn!

❄️ If you would like to put a routine in place that you can use in the stable while the weather is tricky, please do get in touch. My online 'take at your own pace' training is available via my Online Learning Platform, and includes core activation and core mobilisation exercises that you can do in the stable! Amongst many other training modules!
