Improving your connection with your horse

July 15, 20243 min read

Your connection with your horse is one of those 'intangible' things isn't it...BUT...it's a massive part of horse ownership and affects everything we do with them!

If our connection isn't that good, consistent or trusting, we can just end up feeling like we're not good enough, it's all an uphill struggle, there's no real enjoyment in what you're doing with your horse, and it's either mechanical, all a chore, or you just don't want to do it.

Or worse than that, your horse becomes disconnected and you're struggling to actually handle them, resulting in neither of you being safe.

Maybe this is how you feel right now with your horse? I know I've had times when I have felt like this in the past.

And what I experience a lot with horse owners is that their relationship actually gets worse when they are going through difficulties such as injuries/rehab.

So what's the solution?

In a nutshell, working on yourself can actually be the key to ALL OF THIS.

If you feel stuck in this negative version of horse ownership and it's like groundhog day, then what you're doing right now isn't working. And sometimes that's a difficult pill to swallow, and difficult to admit / accept...I know, I have been there, it can be crushing.

But the process of change happens one step at a time, and this is the first step...acceptance!

We are 50% of the equation with our horses, so when we are in negative thought spirals, catastrophising, in overwhelm, anxious, distracted, and in a negative mind chatter with/about our horse, guess what happens...yep, you guessed it, there's a strong possibility of things not going well.

On the other hand, if we are in a positive state of mind, grounded, optimistic, confident, relaxed, looking for and finding the positives in every moment, and therefore ENJOYING every interaction with our horse, the whole scenario is MUCH LIGHTER!

And your horse will feel this and react to this shift in you!

It then becomes fun, encouraging, we feel relaxed, confident and motivated to actually get back to riding and choosing to enjoy our horses! It's like lifting a huge weight off our shoulders!

As a Mindset Coach in addition to my Equine Physio/Rehab/Spinal work, I bring both of these pieces together and help horse owners with working on their own mindset as well as the horses physical issues, to allow their connection to flourish. It might sound counter-intuitive, but I can truly say that creating a strong mindset can create the biggest shifts with your horse!

When you do the work to improve your mindset, your horse feels safer, more relaxed, they are more 'with' you in partnership, and that's when you can really progress. When you're against each other, progress can't happen.

Horses are SUCH sensitive animals, and my experience is they can literally read your mood before you even get close to them.

I would love to share more of this with you, as it's so transformational to do the mindset work, and I've developed an Equine Connection Mastery online course, to share with you the mindset and energy work that will shift your connection with you horse AND create positive change in your life.
