Your Horse Isn't Being Difficult — They're Telling You Something

May 25, 20264 min read

There's a moment a lot of horse owners know.

You go to groom your horse and they pin their ears back. You tack up and they shift away from you. You ask them to move forward under saddle and they resist.

And the thought that follows is usually one of two things.

"What have I done wrong?"

Or worse — "They're just being difficult."

But here's what 15 years of working with horses professionally has taught me.

Difficult is rarely the right word. 🦄

Horses don't have the ability to tell us they're uncomfortable.

They can't say "my back is tight" or "my shoulders are sore" or "I've been carrying tension in my hindquarters for weeks and I really need someone to notice."

So they tell us in the only language they have.

They resist. They brace. They flinch when you touch them. They move unevenly. They lose their spark.

These aren't personality traits.

They're messages. ✨

And the thing about tension in a horse's body is that it builds slowly.

So slowly that most owners don't notice it happening.

One day your horse feels a little stiff on the right rein. A few weeks later they're sensitive across the back when you groom. A month after that they're resistant to going forward and you're wondering what's changed.

Nothing changed suddenly.

It just got to the point where the body couldn't compensate anymore.

This is something I see on almost every horse I work with.

Not because their owners aren't paying attention.

But because tension hides. It builds in the muscles quietly, and horses — being the stoic, generous animals they are — just get on with it for as long as they can. 💚

Azuro taught me this in a very personal way.

After his kissing spine surgery, learning to read his body — really read it — became everything. Learning where he held tension. Learning what releasing it felt like for both of us.

And what I noticed was this: when I took the time to work through his body thoroughly before asking anything of him, everything changed.

He was softer. More willing. More available.

Not because I'd fixed something complicated.

Just because I'd listened. 🐎

Here's the thing most horse owners don't realise.

You can do this too.

You don't need to be a qualified physiotherapist. You don't need expensive equipment. You don't even need to ride.

Massage is one of the most accessible things you can do for your horse — and one of the most powerful.

It's a way to check in with their body. To notice where they're tight before it becomes a problem. To release tension that's been quietly building. To strengthen your connection through calm, positive touch.

And your horse? Most horses absolutely love it once they realise what's happening. 🙌

I've seen horses who were wary of being touched become putty in their owner's hands within a few sessions.

In fact, Amanda — one of my students — shared this after working through the course with her horse, who had been shut down and wary of touch for years:

"Last night he enjoyed his massage! So much so he asked me to carry on! Today he is a super chilled dude... so so pleased!"

That's not a miracle.

That's a horse finally feeling heard.

And when tension is released, everything else gets easier. 💪

The core exercises land better. The in-hand work flows more freely. The ridden work feels different — because the body underneath it all is actually ready.

Massage isn't a luxury add-on.

It's the foundation that makes everything else work better.
