Why Your Horse's Front End Feels Heavy — The Hidden Muscles Doing the Real Work

Here's something most owners don't know: your horse doesn't have a collarbone. 🐴

There's no bony connection between the front legs and the rest of the body at all. Instead, the entire ribcage is suspended between the shoulder blades by a group of muscles and connective tissue called the thoracic sling.

Think about that for a second. The trunk isn't attached to the forelimbs by bone — it's held up entirely by soft tissue, giving it freedom of movement between two supporting pillars.

Next time you watch your horse graze, notice how much time they spend leaning their whole bodyweight down and forward onto the forehand. That's the sling at rest, doing very little. Under saddle, it needs to do the opposite — lift and support, not just hang there.

Which means the quality of that sling — how strong, how switched on, how well-conditioned and flexible it is — directly decides how your horse carries themselves. Every single stride.


Why this matters more than most owners realise

Around 60% of a horse's bodyweight is carried through the forelimbs — so the muscles doing that job aren't a minor detail. They're doing most of the heavy lifting, literally.

A strong thoracic sling improves posture, agility, power and lightness through the forehand, and reduces the risk of injury and lameness. It also reduces the stress placed on the back and spine, making it easier for the horse to cope with the weight of a rider.

But when the sling is weak or underused, the opposite happens.

Poorly toned or inactive sling muscles let the forehand slump down between the shoulder blades, and the withers become less prominent. The horse ends up hanging off the front end rather than lifting through it — and under saddle, that usually means leaning on your hands, using the contact as a fifth leg rather than carrying themselves.

And it doesn't stay isolated to the front. When the thoracic sling is underdeveloped, the ribcage drops, the back hollows, and the shoulder muscles tense up trying to compensate for the sinking trunk. One weak link, and the whole system starts compensating.


What this actually looks like in your horse

If you've ever felt like you're riding "downhill" — heavy in the contact, no spring or elevation to the gaits, like you're riding into the ground rather than off it — this is very often exactly what's happening underneath you.

  • Feeling heavy or "downhill" in the contact

  • Leaning on your hands rather than lifting through the shoulders

  • A dip in front of the withers, or a less defined wither shape

  • Struggling to maintain uphill balance, especially in transitions or turns

  • Tripping or stumbling more than you'd expect

None of these are riding faults on their own. They're often simply the sling not doing its job.


Now imagine the opposite.

A horse who feels light in your hand rather than leaning on it. Who lifts through the wither instead of dropping away from it. Transitions that feel uphill rather than something you have to haul them into. A canter with actual spring in it, not just forward momentum. Turns and circles where they carry themselves round, rather than falling through your outside rein.

That's not a different horse. That's the same horse, with a thoracic sling that's actually doing its job.


And here's the bit that matters going into winter

Less turnout. Less consistent movement. More time standing. All of it means less opportunity for that sling to stay switched on and doing its job — right at the time of year heavier ground and reduced work already tip a horse further onto the forehand.

Which is exactly why this is worth addressing now, not once you're already noticing it under saddle.


Here's where most people get this wrong

The instinct is to go straight to strengthening — more transitions, more hill work, more "pushing" exercises to build power from behind.

But if the thoracic sling itself is stiff, restricted, or not moving properly first, you're not building better posture. You're just reinforcing what I call negative posture — strengthening the downhill pattern more deeply into your horse's body. More effort, same problem, now with stronger muscles holding it in place.

There's an order to this that actually works:

  1. Mobilise the thoracic sling first. Get all of those structures moving properly again before asking for anything else.

  2. Activate the postural muscles. This is what starts to genuinely change the posture, not just manage it.

  3. Strengthen the new posture into a default. Once the better pattern is there, this is what makes it stick.

Skip step one, and you're building strength on top of the exact problem you're trying to fix.

Get the order right, and you end up with a lighter, more balanced horse, properly off the forehand — not just for the odd good stride, but as their new normal.
