Why Your Horse’s Topline Isn’t Changing (Even If You’re Doing the Work)

April 20, 20263 min read

🐎 If you’ve been working on your horse’s strength, but their topline still isn’t really changing…

You’re not alone.

This is something I hear all the time.

You’re:

  • doing the exercises

  • trying to build strength

  • putting the effort in

And yet… your horse still looks much the same.

And it’s frustrating.

Because it feels like the work should be showing by now.

Here’s what most people don’t realise

Topline isn’t something you build directly.

It’s something that develops as a result of how your horse moves.

So if your horse is still:

  • uneven

  • relying more on one side

  • not quite using their body correctly

They physically can’t build the topline you’re aiming for.

Because the body will always strengthen around the way it’s being used.

This is where it often goes wrong

A lot of people focus on adding exercises to build strength.

And those exercises can absolutely help.

But if the movement underneath them isn’t changing…

You’re just strengthening the patterns that are already there.

You’re strengthening negative patterns in the body.

So your horse might feel stronger…
but they’re not actually becoming more balanced.

This links directly to crookedness

Most horses naturally rely more on one diagonal pair of limbs.

Almost like a “prop” that helps them stabilise.

And unless that’s addressed, it becomes their default way of moving.

So even when you’re trying to build strength…

That same pattern is still there underneath.

And if the core isn’t activating properly…
and your horse is overusing one diagonal pair…
and neither of those things are being addressed…

then nothing is really changing.

At that point, it’s worth stepping back and asking:

Is what I’m doing actually improving this?

Or am I just continuing in the same way…
and hoping it will change over time?

This is where the shift needs to happen

Because things don’t tend to change on their own.

Not when these patterns are already established.

It’s not about doing more.

It’s about doing something different.

Where this usually needs to start

For most horses, this starts with improving how the core and postural muscles are working.

Because if those areas aren’t activating properly…

  • your horse can’t lift through their body

  • they can’t support themselves well

  • and they fall back into the same movement patterns

Which means the topline never really has a chance to develop.

This is why I nearly always begin with simple core work

  • to help switch on the right muscles

  • and start changing how the body is being used

Because once that changes…

The topline starts to follow.

This is where most people get stuck

Once you’ve started to improve things…

what you do next becomes just as important.

Because this is where horses often:

  • improve slightly

  • then plateau

  • or go back to old patterns

Not because the work isn’t helping…

but because it’s not being built on in the right way.

This is where structure makes a difference

That’s exactly what I focus on inside my Strength & Straightness Training Programme.

It’s not about giving you more to do.

It’s about helping you:

  • progress the work correctly

  • address what’s still being missed

  • and build real, lasting change over time

Final thought

If your horse’s topline isn’t changing…

It’s not just about effort.

It’s about what’s happening underneath the surface.

And whether your training is actually addressing it.
