Your Horse Isn’t Stiff — You’re Just Seeing the Result of This
🐎 If you’ve ever felt like one rein is harder…
your horse feels stiff…
or something just isn’t quite even…
You’re not alone.
This is one of the most common things I see.
And it’s easy to label it as stiffness.
Of course, if something doesn’t feel right in your horse, it’s always worth paying attention to that.
But in many cases, what you’re feeling isn’t actually stiffness at all.
Here’s what’s really going on
What you’re feeling is often the result of something deeper.
Imbalance.
Asymmetry.
A horse that finds one side easier… and starts relying on it.
Horses are naturally one-sided — just like us.
They’ll:
load one side more
find bend easier one way
stabilise better in one direction
That’s completely normal.
But it goes a step further than that.
Most horses will naturally start to rely more on one diagonal pair of limbs.
Almost like a “prop” that they use to stabilise themselves.
It often develops early on in life as a pattern…and unless it’s addressed, it becomes their default way of moving.
And once that pattern is established, everything starts to organise around it.
You might notice:
one rein feels heavier
they fall in or drift more one way
one side feels harder to bend or connect
Which means you’re not just dealing with stiffness…you’re working with a whole movement pattern that’s already been set.
Why it keeps coming back
If your horse is:
falling in on one rein
heavier in one hand
harder to bend one way
That’s not something that fixes itself over time.
And it’s not something that improves just by doing more.
Because if the body is already moving unevenly…every time you ride, you’re reinforcing that pattern.
So even if you’re:
doing the exercises
being consistent
trying to do the right thing
You can still feel like you’re not getting anywhere.
What to start noticing
A good place to begin is simply paying closer attention.
Notice:
which side feels easier
where your horse drifts or falls in
whether they’re actually carrying themselves evenly
Your horse will tell you everything if you slow down and look closely enough.
But this is where most people get stuck
Awareness is important.
But it’s not enough on its own.
Because this isn’t about doing one exercise here and there.
It’s about how you train over time.
How you:
guide your horse out of those patterns
build strength in the weaker side
create balance that actually lasts
This is the real shift
Most people are trying to fix stiffness.
But stiffness is just the symptom.
The real work is in retraining the movement.
And this is where a clear structure matters
This is where so many riders feel stuck.
Not because they’re doing it wrong…
But because they don’t have a clear plan.
What to do.
When to do it.
And how to actually progress.
That’s exactly why I created my Strength & Straightness Training Programme.
Because you don’t need more exercises.
You need a clear, structured way to train your horse, so they become stronger, straighter, and more balanced over time.
If you want a clear plan to follow, this is exactly what I’ve created.

Final thought
You’re not just dealing with stiffness.
You’re seeing the result of how your horse is using their body.
And once you start changing that…everything else starts to change too.
