Have You Ever Tried In-Hand Exercises with Your Horse?
🐴 Have You Ever Tried In-Hand Exercises with Your Horse?
Discover new ways to keep your horse strong, supple, and connected this winter
If you’ve been following my work for a while — or perhaps you’ve already completed the Core Exercises for Your Horse course — you’ll know how powerful even small, mindful movements can be when it comes to improving your horse’s strength and comfort.
But once your horse has started to activate their core and move more freely, there’s a whole new world of fun and effective training you can explore…
And it doesn’t require perfect weather, a huge arena, or even being in the saddle.
🌿 The Next Step: Working With Your Horse from the Ground
Have you ever tried in-hand exercises?
They’re one of the most underestimated tools for helping your horse develop better posture, balance, and coordination — without the added weight of a rider.
From gentle lateral steps to transitions and rein-backs, in-hand work helps your horse:
Strengthen through their core and hindquarters
Improve their flexibility and suppleness
Develop more symmetrical, balanced movement
Learn to think for themselves and move freely, without potential interference from the rider
In my course, I teach a specific method of in-hand work that prepares your horse to perform lateral movements such as shoulder-in, quarters-in, leg yield, and turn on the forehand.
It’s a clear, step-by-step approach that anyone can learn, and it’s so beneficial for your horse’s body and brain — helping them feel more coordinated, balanced, and confident in their own movement.
It’s amazing how much you can feel your horse begin to engage, even with simple movements.
💫 Lunging & Polework: Variety that Builds Strength — Even in Walk
Many riders think of lunging as “just exercise,” or polework as something to do when riding — but when used with awareness, both become powerful tools for improving posture and body control.
Here’s the best part:
✅ You can do every exercise in walk, which makes them perfect for any horse — whether they’re in rehab, need an easier day, or when riding isn’t an option.
✅ They’re also ideal for fitting in a quick, flexible session before it gets dark — just pop on your cavesson, head to the arena, and you’re ready to go!
✅ You can mix it up — try them in-hand, on the lunge, or ridden — depending on your goals and your horse’s energy that day.
My lunging techniques were developed when I ran a rehabilitation yard, training horses to move in good posture without the use of gadgets or restrictive training aids.
These methods helped countless horses rebuild strength, balance, and confidence — and you can do this too by following the same principles in your groundwork.
🪶 A Note on Training Aids
If you do choose to use training aids, it’s important to select ones that support natural posture and encourage self-carriage, rather than creating artificial frames or restriction.
Used with awareness, gentle aids can help guide your horse toward better movement patterns — but the goal is always for them to find that balance on their own.
My approach focuses on developing the horse’s proprioception, strength, and confidence so they no longer need external support — and so that every session builds lasting, functional strength.
This flexibility means you can keep progressing all winter long, even if the weather isn’t cooperating.
🐎 Keeping the Momentum Going
I’ve seen so many horses become more balanced, more relaxed, and more confident once their owners add these kinds of sessions into their weekly routine.
They move differently. They carry themselves differently. And they enjoy the work — because it feels good in their body.
If you’ve been loving the results of your core exercises and want to build on that foundation, now is the perfect time to explore these next steps.
