In-Hand Work Isn't as Complicated as You Think — Here's Where to Start
Let me guess.
You've seen in-hand work being done — maybe at a clinic, maybe online — and it looked impressive.
And a little intimidating.
Horses moving with collection, handlers walking alongside them with long whips, precise footwork, classical technique...
And you thought: that's not for me. I'd never be able to do that.
Here's what I want to tell you. 🦄
What you saw was the advanced version.
And like everything else with horses, it starts somewhere much simpler than that.
The in-hand work I teach starts with three things.
Helping your horse to stand square.
Training equal bend in each direction.
And then building from there.
That's it.
No specialist equipment. No years of classical training. No previous experience required.
Just a schooling whip — used as an extension of your arm to gently guide your horse — and ideally a cavesson. That's your whole kit list. ✨
Here's why most people overcomplicate in-hand work.
They see the end result and assume the process must be equally complex.
But the truth is, the exercises that make the biggest difference to your horse's posture, symmetry and way of going are the foundational ones.
Standing square teaches your horse to organise their body and distribute their weight evenly — something most horses never learn to do consciously.
Equal bend in each direction identifies immediately which side is stiffer, which side needs more work, and gives you something clear and specific to address.
And once your horse can do those two things well?
Shoulder-in is genuinely just the next step. 💪
Not a leap. Not a different discipline.
Just a natural progression from the bend work you've already been doing.
I remember the first time I asked Azuro for shoulder-in under saddle.
We'd been doing all the foundational work on the ground — standing square, equal bend, building gradually towards the lateral work, and we had started a little bit of shoulder-in on the ground in our sessions.
And when I asked for it from the saddle for the first time...
He just showed it to me.
Quietly. Correctly. Like he'd been waiting for me to ask. 🐎
That was the moment I understood what in-hand work really does.
It's not just ground preparation.
It's teaching your horse the movement before you add the complexity of a rider.
And allowing them to feel it in their body, so the brain and body connects.
So then when you ask for it from the saddle, they already know what you mean, and can offer it.
The penny drop had already happened — on the ground, in a calm, unhurried way — and all I had to do was ask from the saddle.
This is why in-hand work is so accessible — and so effective — for any horse owner, regardless of experience.
You don't need to be a classical rider.
You don't need specialist knowledge or expensive equipment.
You don't need perfect timing or years of feel.
You need a willing horse, a schooling whip used as an extension of your arm, a cavesson if you have one, and a simple, logical progression to follow.
The fear of getting it wrong is the biggest barrier.
And once you start — once you feel your horse begin to find the bend, begin to understand what you're asking — that fear dissolves pretty quickly. 🦄
Because horses are much more forgiving of imperfect technique than we give them credit for.
They respond to clarity. To consistency. To a handler who knows what they're building towards.
My In-Hand Exercises Course is built on exactly this approach.
The foundation part of the course is 5-6 basic exercises that any owner can start with this week, before progressing into the rest of the course.
I cover the tack, the body positioning, the breath, the progression — everything — in a way that feels logical and achievable rather than technical and overwhelming.
No fussiness. No science-heavy jargon. Just a clear, simple method that works with your horse's natural way of learning.
And the results — in symmetry, core strength, posture and what you feel under saddle — speak for themselves.
